A few habits that can save you a repair bill.

  • Spilled something on it?

    Don't: Bury it in a bag of rice and hope. Rice is for supper.

    Do: Turn it off, unplug it, and leave it off until it's been looked at.

  • A pop-up says you're infected

    Don't: Call the number on the screen. Real security warnings don't come with a phone number.

    Do: Close the browser, don't click anything in the pop-up, and ask someone you trust.

  • Your photos and files

    Don't: Trust one hard drive to last forever. It has other plans.

    Do: Keep a second copy somewhere else — an external drive or a cloud backup.

  • It's acting strange

    Don't: Hold the power button down every time it hiccups. Forcing it off mid-task can damage files.

    Do: Restart it properly first. Turning it off and on again fixes more than you'd think.

  • An update is taking forever

    Don't: Pull the plug halfway through. That's how a slow update becomes a repair.
